Opening a Bank Account in Georgia as a Foreigner – What You Need to Know

Opening a Bank Account in Georgia as a Foreigner – What You Need to Know — GTP blog

Why a Georgian Bank Account Matters

Anyone moving to Georgia, founding a company or buying property will sooner or later reach the same point: a Georgian bank account is needed. For rent, for business transactions, for tax filing, for daily life.

The good news: Georgia’s banking system is modern, digital and accessible to foreigners. The country’s two largest banks – TBC Bank and Bank of Georgia – are among the most digitally advanced banks in the entire region. Mobile banking, online transfers, multilingual apps – all of it works well.

The less good news: as a foreigner without a Georgian tax ID or an existing business structure, opening an account can occasionally involve more effort than expected. Coming prepared saves time and frustration.

The Main Banks at a Glance

Bank of Georgia is the largest bank and equally well positioned. Strong in the area of business accounts and international transactions. Many international companies and expats use Bank of Georgia as their choice for business banking.

TBC Bank is Georgia’s largest bank by total asset. The Mobile app is available in English, online services are well developed, and branches in Tbilisi are modern and well organised. Perfect choice for both personal and business accounts.

Liberty Bank is the third largest bank and has the densest branch network in the country. Less internationally oriented, but well suited for everyday banking needs.

Credo Bank and Basis Bank are smaller institutions that also offer accounts for foreigners – in certain situations an alternative when the larger banks present difficulties.

Personal Account vs. Business Account – What Is the Difference?

This is the first question to ask yourself – before going to the bank.

Personal account – for everyday life: paying rent, shopping, receiving salary. Relatively straightforward to open as an EU citizen with a passport. In some cases a passport alone is sufficient – in others, a Georgian tax ID (PIN) or proof of address is also required.

Business account – for those who have registered an LLC or sole trader in Georgia. The business account is held in the company’s name and is necessary for all commercial transactions. Opening one requires the company to already be registered – the registration documents are presented at the bank.

Important: Personal and business accounts are strictly separate in Georgia. Business income should always run through the business account – this is correct both from a tax and a legal perspective.

Opening a bank account in Georgia is straightforward in principle – if you have the right documents and know which bank is the best choice for your purpose. Those founding a company should keep personal and business accounts cleanly separated from the start.
